2025 Fall Residential Open Burn Season: Oct. 16th - Nov. 15th

The Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kansas, will allow residential properties within the city limits of Kansas City, Kansas to conduct Residential Open Burning beginning on October 16th through November 15th.

An application portal has been established on the Kansas City Kansas Fire Department's website (kckfd.org) where residents may apply for a 3-day permit for open burn. Open burning is the burning of any matter so that products of combustion from the burning are emitted directly into the ambient (outside) air. Generally, anytime you light a fire outdoors, you are open burning.

General Open Burn Information

  • Permits are limited to residential properties;
  • Burn Barrels are considered open burning and require a permit
  • Shall be inside of a ringed fire pit with a 3-foot diameter or less
  • One (1) permit per address during the 30-day burn period;
  • Only organic yard waste produced on the permitted property may be burned;
  • You must apply at least 1 day in advance (you may apply up until midnight the day before

  • Check the weather before applying; the system will allow you to apply for a permit up to 3-days in advance. (Sustained winds over 15-mph and/ or wind gusts over 25-mph will SUSPEND all open burning.)

  • A banner on the top of the Fire Department and Unified Government webpage will advise if open burning has been suspended for the day due to hazardous weather conditions.

Open Burn Safety Recommendations

  • All burn piles shall be completely extinguished by 6pm each evening
  • Burn piles are limited to 100 square feet at the base (10-foot by 10-foot)
  • Do not use gasoline for starting the fire
  • Stay near the burn pile with a water source until completely extinguished
  • Do not burn trash, wiring, construction debris, furniture, treated lumber or any other rubbish. These items can create a hazard to public health and is strictly prohibited
  • Fires must be attended at all times until completely extinguished

In order to use the online application portal, the applicant must have a valid email address. A copy of the permit must be kept with the applicant during the open burn in hardcopy or on their mobile device.

Residents who do not have a valid email address may apply in person at any Kansas City Kansas Fire Station. Please Note: All outdoor fires of any classification shall be attended at all times with an approved extinguishment source must be kept near the fire for immediate use.
