The Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) Department of Music invites the community to an evening of brass and organ music at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, at First United Methodist Church in Weatherford. The free concert will feature the SWOSU brass ensembles, the Brass Choir and Low Brass Choir, with a special guest performance by SWOSU faculty member Dr. Sophia Lee on organ.

The program will feature antiphonal works by Renaissance and early Baroque composers Giovanni Gabrieli, Tiburtio Massaino and Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. These works were written for groups of musicians positioned in different locations. Brass ensembles will answer and interact with one another across the church, allowing listeners to experience how composers used space as part of the music.

"Performing this music in a space like First United Methodist Church gives our students a chance to experience and share something special," said Dr. Philip Martinson, associate professor of trombone and director of the SWOSU Brass Choir. "The antiphonal pieces are especially exciting because the music comes alive through the interaction between the groups, and having Dr. Lee join us on organ adds another wonderful dimension to the program."

The SWOSU brass ensembles will also perform works by Brian Sadler, Daniel Jones, Peter Warlock, Anton Bruckner, Christopher Sharpe and Václav Nelhybel. Together, the selections span centuries of music and demonstrate the expressive range of brass ensembles.

The concert is open to the public, and community members of all ages are welcome. For more information about the SWOSU Department of Music and its programs, visit swosu.edu/music.
