As a powerful storm barrels across the Southeast United States, Tampa Electric is sending about 60 people to help restore power in the Panhandle.
Hurricane Isaias is expected to bring strong winds, storm surge, heavy rain and potential tornadoes as it moves across the region this weekend. Utilities are preparing for widespread power outages.
About 28 Tampa Electric line workers and 30 support personnel left at dawn today to drive to the Panhandle to help Florida Power & Light.
Tampa Electric has sufficient crews in place to respond to any local weather-related issues.
Why is Tampa Electric sending crews to other states?
When weather causes widespread outages, many electric companies, including Tampa Electric, share trained line workers, equipment and other resources to help restore power safely and as quickly as possible in the impacted communities. This partnership helps communities recover faster and more efficiently than they could on their own.
How does utility mutual assistance work?
Tampa Electric is a member of the Southeastern Electric Exchange (SEE), a mutual-aid organization that coordinates assistance among electric utilities during storms and other emergencies.
Crews supporting the restoration efforts of other utilities are paid by the host utility.
Tampa Electric, one of Florida's largest investor-owned electric utilities, serves about 870,000 customers in West Central Florida. Tampa Electric is a subsidiary of Emera Inc. (NYSE: EMA)
