PowerSouth Energy Cooperative is the generation and transmission arm formed to serve the interests of 18 distribution cooperatives and four municipal systems representing over 1.2 million lives in Alabama and Northwest Florida. These 22 members have delivered light to every corner of this footprint since electric service first became available in the 1930s and 40s.
Across our service territory, today's needs are real and visible. Better healthcare access. Stronger schools. Roads and bridges. Economic development. Poverty and unemployment remain significant challenges for many communities. These issues matter deeply, because they affect the quality of life of the people we serve.
Yet PowerSouth and its member systems cannot solve every challenge facing the region, even though they would like to. The reality is that we were not created to be all things to all people. History teaches us that organizations often lose effectiveness when they drift too far from their core purpose in pursuit of worthy but unrelated causes.
That's why we uphold our central purpose, which has always been clear: to be a lighthouse that guides the path toward safe, reliable, and affordable electrification. Electricity may seem ordinary because it is present every day, but it is the foundation upon which modern life is built. Without it, hospitals cannot operate, schools cannot teach, businesses cannot grow, and communities cannot prosper.
Author Ann Lamott wrote, "Lighthouses don't go running all over an island looking for boats to save; they just stand there shining."
That image captures our role perfectly. We do not create prosperity by chasing every problem. We create prosperity by excelling at the mission entrusted to us: keeping the lights on, planning responsibly, investing wisely, maintaining affordability, and ensuring reliability when our members and their consumers need us most.
When a lighthouse shines brightly, ships find safe harbor. In the same way, when we fulfill our mission exceptionally well, others are empowered to fulfill theirs. Doctors can care for patients. Teachers can educate children. Manufacturers can create jobs. Entrepreneurs can build businesses. Communities can grow and thrive.
At times, our members have found opportunities to provide additional services for their service areas that naturally complement that purpose. Whether bringing broadband to underserved communities, supporting water and wastewater systems, or investing in infrastructure that enhances the quality of life in rural areas, these efforts have been most successful when they build upon the trusted relationships and capabilities that electric service established. They are not departures from our purpose. They are selective extensions of it.
Sometimes, when circumstances warrant and capabilities align, the lighthouse may illuminate more than one channel into the harbor. But the source of the light never changes. It remains rooted in the mission that created it.
We cannot be every solution to every challenge. But if we remain focused on our purpose of providing safe, reliable, affordable electricity, we become an enabler of countless solutions. Like a lighthouse, our greatest contribution is not running in every direction. It is standing firm, shining brightly, and helping others find their way. And when opportunities arise to serve our communities through closely related services such as broadband or water infrastructure, we do our best from a position of strength, guided by the same commitment to service that first brought electricity to rural Alabama and Northwest Florida.
