We've been celebrating Sheriff's Week in New York as this week celebrates the 58 Sheriffs across New York who lead patrol, community programs, emergency response, jail operations, and civil duties. Each year, the third week of September honors the enduring history and vital services provided by the Office of Sheriff.
In Washington County, our Sheriff's Office has served since 1772, when the county was first organized as Charlotte County. Our first Sheriff, Philip P. Lansing, took office before the Revolution. In 1784, the county was renamed Washington County in honor of George Washington and the Sheriff's Office has continued its service for more than 250 years.
From enforcing order during the Revolutionary War, to fighting bootlegging in the 1920s, to today's specialized units in patrol, K-9, corrections, civil duties and more, the mission has remained the same, to protect and serve our community. Under the leadership of our current Sheriff (Sheriff Murphy) commitment to our community is stronger than ever.
We're proud of our history, our community and we're proud of the men and women who serve Washington County every day.
