APIC Releases Resource to Help Healthcare Providers Adapt Essential Infection Practice Settings to Home-Based Settings

June 15, Nashville, TN - Today, the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) released "Adapting Essential Infection Prevention Practices for Home Healthcare Settings: Recommendations for Home Healthcare Organizations and Policymakers " at their annual scientific meeting in Nashville, Tennessee.

With increasing numbers of patients receiving complex medical treatments at home, the risk of infection transmission presents unique challenges that differ significantly from those encountered in hospitals or long-term care environments.

APIC 2026 President, Kathy Ward, RN, BSN, MPH, FAPIC, CIC said, "Currently, many home healthcare providers must struggle to develop infection prevention and control processes for home healthcare based on their knowledge of acute care. That means there is a lot of variability in home healthcare settings, including access to equipment and caregivers with diverse levels of training."

APIC developed this resource to improve patient safety by providing home healthcare organizations with evidence-based infection prevention and control strategies that will be adaptable to home healthcare environments. After developing this resource, Ms. Ward said, "We also wanted to share some recommendations for policymakers to consider related to infection prevention and control in home-based healthcare settings, in particular how we can reduce variability and improve evidence-based care for patients in these settings."
