ICYMI: On ABC’s This Week, Kelly Discusses Political Courage and the Importance of Putting Country Over Politics

In case you missed it, Senators Mark Kelly (D-AZ) and Todd Young (R-IN), alongside 'Courage Can Save Us' author Rye Barcott, sat down with ABC News' This Week host Jonathan Karl to discuss the importance of political courage, as highlighted in the book's profiles of both senators, and the need to put country over politics. During the conversation, Kelly reflected on making difficult decisions in the Senate, challenging leaders in both parties when Arizona's interests are at stake, and working across the aisle to deliver results despite political differences.

Sens. Kelly and Young speak with host Jonathan Karl.

On working across the aisle…

"You have to compartmentalize things. We're all adults, we understand the complexities of our own individual politics and certainly how complex it is especially for Republicans with this administration in particular."

On putting Arizona ahead of party politics…

"It's fair to say the Biden Administration did a bad job at the border. Now, I am a border Senator, I represent the state of Arizona. This was affecting my constituents more than it was affecting, let's say, Todd's in Indiana. I wound up in a situation with them where I had to do some unpopular things and I think unpopular things for being a Democrat."

On the current state of America…

"We are clearly very divided. Americans are not optimistic at this point. Congress is deeply unpopular. My view on this, Todd might disagree, is that we have a President that looks at every opportunity not as opportunity to bring the country together, but to further divide us."
