Libations With a Linguist returns May 13

April 29, 2026

Western's Department of Linguistics is proud to announce our next "Libations With a Linguist" event, scheduled for May 13, 2026 from 6-8 p.m. at Zeek's Pizza in Bellingham.

Brian Hutchinson

Dr. Brian Hutchinson, a Professor in Western's Computer Science Department, will present "Words in (High Dimensional) Space: How Large Language Models Encode Meaning." The large language models powering modern AI "see" words as points in a vast mathematical space. We'll take a non-technical tour of this space and how language is represented in it.

Faculty from Western's Linguistics Department organize these community round-table discussions throughout the year. These talks are free and open to the public of all ages.

See our website for more information.
