(BOWIE, Md.) - Today, our representative, Congressman Steny Hoyer announced he will not seek re-election and will retire. We owe a great deal to Congressman Hoyer for his leadership and public service, including championing the value of education in Maryland. The Bowie State University campus community will miss his presence and leadership, and we are profoundly grateful for his extraordinary service to the people of Prince George's County, the State of Maryland and our nation.
Congressman Hoyer was the very first elected official to welcome me to the district when I became president of Bowie State University, and, from that moment forward, he offered not only his support but his steadfast partnership. Because of his leadership and advocacy, our university has been able to grow, thrive and more fully serve our students and community.
I watched his retirement announcement and was struck by the sincerity, humility and grace with which he reflected on a long and distinguished career. At a time when our laws are being tested and our democratic values are under strain, his unwavering commitment to public service, principled leadership and the rule of law stands as a powerful example for this generation and the next.
The Bowie State University Bulldogs, and the citizens of Prince George's County and the State of Maryland, will forever be indebted to Congressman Steny Hoyer for a lifetime of service rooted in integrity, courage and an abiding belief in democracy. On behalf of the Bowie State University campus community, we wish Congressman Steny Hoyer the very best in the next chapter.
