Groundbreaking for animal shelter expansion

The City of Lewisville will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion of the Gene Carey Animal Shelter and Adoption Center, 995 E. Valley Ridge Boulevard, on Friday, Oct. 2, beginning at 8 a.m.

In 2024, Lewisville voters overwhelmingly approved Proposition B of the Bond Election, which allocated $9.9 million for this expansion project. This groundbreaking marks the beginning of the construction phase with selective demolition scheduled to begin in October.

The 14,000-square-foot facility opened in 2012. In 2024, staff reported an average of about 2,800 animals taken in each year, with the shelter consistently operating at more than 90 percent capacity. The current sterilization room doubles as a multipurpose room, so bathing and dishwashing stop during surgeries. The shelter is an open intake facility for Lewisville residents and accepts any animal regardless of health, age, or breed. A dedicated surgical suite means spay and neuter surgeries no longer shut down daily care like bathing and cleaning.

The expansion will include:

• Additional large dog kennel space
• Additional cat kennel space
• A surgical suite with pre-op and post-op recovery rooms
• Expansion of the laundry facility
• Additional Supervisor office

Steele & Freeman Construction, Inc. has been selected as the Construction Manager at Risk for the project. Quorum Architects of Fort Worth, which designed the current shelter, is the architect for the expansion, and Peak Program Value is providing project management.
Once the project begins, the City will provide construction updates on the "Animal Services" page at cityoflewisville.com. The project is expected to be complete in Fall 2027.
