Congressman Begich Votes to Pass Affordable HOMES Act to Lower Housing Costs in Alaska

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Jan. 9, 2026 - Today, Congressman Nick Begich (R-AK) voted to pass H.R. 5184, the Affordable Housing Over Mandating Efficiency Standards (HOMES) Act, legislation that lowers housing costs by eliminating duplicative federal regulations that have driven up the price of manufactured housing - one of the most important sources of affordable homes in Alaska and across the country.

"Alaska is facing a housing crisis that hits families harder than almost anywhere else in the country," said Congressman Begich. "Alaskans are dealing with limited housing supply, sky-high construction costs, and energy prices that make both building and living in a home more expensive. The passage of the Affordable HOMES Act is an important step toward lowering housing costs in Alaska by cutting red tape and making manufactured housing more accessible for working families. When we combine commonsense regulatory reform with expanding Alaska's resource opportunities to lower energy costs, we put our state on a real path toward affordability. Lower energy costs mean lower construction costs, lower utility bills, and more homes that Alaskans can actually afford. We must increase supply and restore the American Dream of homeownership for Alaskans."

BACKGROUND:

The Affordable HOMES Actremoves duplicative authority that allowed multiple federal agencies to impose conflicting energy standards on manufactured housing, while preserving HUD's long-standing regulatory role. By streamlining the process, the legislation helps reduce construction costs, increase housing availability, and make homeownership more attainable for working families.

With House passage, the Affordable HOMES Actadvances House Republicans' broader effort to lower costs, reduce inflation, and put families back on a path to homeownership - including in Alaska, where housing shortages and high building costs have long limited opportunity.
