Mourning the Life of Charlie Kirk
Maude and I are deeply saddened by the horrific murder of our dear friend, Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated earlier this week by a political, hate-filled leftist demon while speaking to young Americans at a college rally in Utah. Charlie Kirk was a patriot, Christian, and tireless activist who traveled America engaging primarily young people in civil discourse. Charlie was doing what he loved doing - building a platform to share his faith in Jesus Christ and welcoming peaceful political dialogue and public debate - before his life was cut short by a radicalized monster. Words cannot describe the loss we feel. Charlie's voice, conviction, and friendship will be dearly missed. During this unimaginable time, our heart goes out to his wife, Erika, and their two young children. The Gospel of Matthew reminds us that violence cannot stop God's purpose. Jesus said "I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail (Mathew 16:18)." Bullets cannot silence the Word. May God bring comfort and peace to Charlie's family.
Remembering 9/11
This week marks the twenty-fourth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on our nation. The horrific events that unfolded that day claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 Americans and forever impacted many more. The senseless terrorist attacks that took place in New York City, Washington D.C., and a field in Pennsylvania fundamentally altered our nation. Commercial airliners were weaponized, our Pentagon was attacked, and the World Trade Center Towers were felled. Yet, in one of America's darkest hours, Americans were united by God, heroism and compassion.
As we take a moment to commemorate the great losses our nation suffered 24 years ago, we also continue to be inspired by the raw strength and resilience displayed by our great nation in the grief and aftermath. To this day, America's fortitude continues to set an example, even during trying times.
While this day is still difficult and we cannot bring back the precious lives that were tragically lost by the brutal attacks, we must never forget their sacrifice and those who protect our freedom.
I am also incredibly grateful to our service men and women who continue to fight to defeat terrorism, often away from their families and in harm's way. We honor all who died and all who have sacrificed to keep America safe. May we never forget!
Congress Advances Gosar Legislation to Make Washington, D.C. Safe
Earlier this week, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee on which I serve held a markup of legislation, including H.R. 5813, to ensure our nation's capital is safe and beautiful. The legislation empowers District law enforcement to combat the juvenile crime crisis, increases educational opportunities for D.C. children, and ensures a beautiful capital city for all Americans.
My bill establishes a uniform 60-day congressional review period for all D.C. Council legislation, eliminates the ability of the D.C. Council to extend emergency laws in perpetuity, provides for a line item veto of D.C. Acts in Congressional resolutions of disapproval, prohibits the D.C. Council from withdrawing legislation from the congressional review process, prohibits the D.C. Council from passing substantially similar laws to legislation that was successfully disapproved by Congress, and provides for a similar Congressional review process of D.C. regulations and Mayoral executive actions.
H.R. 5813 takes important steps to end the lawlessness in our nation's capital. Congress retains ultimate responsibility for the government of the District of Columbia yet in recent years the D.C. Council has advanced a series of dangerous soft-on-crime measures to weaken law enforcement and ignore public safety. The D.C. Council has shown time and time again that it can't be trusted to put public safety first. My bill reflects longstanding conservative principles: upholding the Constitution, defending law and order, and ensuring that the federal government fulfills its duty to safeguard the nation's capital.

House Passes Annual National Defense Legislation
With my vote in support, the House of Representatives passed the annual National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) this week that prioritizes policies to modernize our defense capabilities, institutes key quality of life improvements for our service members and their families, and expands the Department of War's support for border security efforts. The safety and security of the American people, our homeland and our troops abroad are our utmost priority. The NDAA represents our solemn obligation to ensure that our heroic men and women in uniform have the support, the best equipment and the resources they need to not only face the threats of today but deter the threats of tomorrow.
Should Arizona Get Repaid for Securing the Border When Biden Failed to Protect Us?
This week, Arizona legislative leaders have requested the federal government to reimburse Arizona for the hundreds of millions of dollars it spent attempting to close our open border after Joe Biden opened the borders and let in 20 million criminals.
As part of H.R. 1 (the One Big Beautiful Bill that I was happy to support), we authorized $10 billion for the federal government to reimburse those states that incurred massive costs trying to keep the border secure. Texas clearly has the longest border with Mexico, and it spent a lot. But Arizona, with the second-longest border, spent at least $599 million of state money trying to hold the line.
Legislative leaders submitted a letter to DHS Secretary Noem seeking reimbursement under this law. As we all know, starting in 2021, millions of illegal immigrants began crossing the border with the assistance of the Biden administration.
I think Arizona has a good case for reimbursement and I will support this claim. I went to the border many times over the past several years and saw the harm firsthand. I witnessed the drug cartels carrying rifles, looming across the Colorado River, as we looked on from the Yuma side. The cartels were paid billions of dollars by Biden Democrats, using your tax money, to escort the illegal aliens to that drop point. The illegal aliens arrived with new clothing, were well fed, arrived at the border in chartered buses, and slept in expensive hotels along the way. Again, all paid for by us. None of them were actual refugees. They just wanted to cross the open border and get the free housing, free food, free health care, free education and free phones that were being given. And cross they did, by the millions.
It will take a long time to fix the harm caused by the Biden administration. The influx of illegal aliens caused massive inflation, housing shortages, and a crime wave that would make Al Capone blush. Arizona taxpayers deserve to be reimbursed for trying to do the job the federal government failed to do.
