Since September 2025, Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) vision care coverage has included the purchase of AI glasses, such as Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta. Regular Force and eligible full-time Reserve Force members were entitled to reimbursement for AI glasses up to a maximum of $600 within their two-year entitlement period, with any costs exceeding the $600 maximum at the member's responsibility. However, due to recent DND/CAF policy changes regarding AI glasses, members are no longer authorized to use their entitlement (reimbursable amount as per policy) to purchase these types of eyewear.

What are AI glasses?

AI glasses are regular-looking eyewear with discreetly integrated glasses technology. At first glance, these glasses look like normal sunglasses or prescription glasses, but inside, they include tiny speakers, microphones, a lightweight camera, or even a small display that sits within your field of view. They allow the wearer to see calls, messages and notifications, and answer with a voice command, listen to music, or capture photos or videos through the lenses.

Important DND/CAF security considerations for wearers

There are restrictions on the use of AI glasses with video recording technology that include any recording or communication capability including, but not limited to, Bluetooth, Wi Fi, audio, and video within some DND/CAF workspaces, and these restrictions may become more widespread in the future. Currently, AIglasses and any similar smart eyewear are strictly forbidden in all Operations Zones, Security Zones, and High Security Zones. There are no exceptions for these devices, even if the user claims the device is "off" or in "airplane mode."

All Defence Team employees have a right to privacy within DND/CAF workplaces, and the unauthorized filming or photography of any personnel using AI glasses is forbidden and may be subject to disciplinary measures.

Impacts for those who have bought or are considering AI glasses

Members cannot use their eyeglass entitlement to purchase AI glasses. It is therefore the responsibility of the member to ensure that they plan accordingly when purchasing eyewear.

If a member has recently purchased AI glasses in good faith before this notice and works in a DND/CAF location where AI glasses are prohibited, they may be eligible for a regular pair of glasses. To verify eligibility, they must send their request along with their AI glasses invoice to their CF Health Services Centre (CF H Svcs C) no later than September 15, 2026. These requests will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis by the Federal Health Claims Processing Service (FHCPS) Vision Services Manager.
