Kamlager-Dove, Vargas Lead Federal Effort to Block Immigrants’ Personal Data from Being Used Against them for Deportations

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Reps. Sydney Kamlager-Dove (CA-37) and Juan Vargas (CA-52) led colleagues in introducing two new bills to protect immigrant families by blocking federal agencies from sharing personal data with DHS for immigration enforcement purposes. Recently, DHS officials have been given unprecedented access to the sensitive personal data of millions - including home addresses and ethnicities - through data sharing agreements with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). These disclosures upend privacy protections and represent an extreme escalation in Trump's out-of-control immigration crackdown.

To combat these threats, Reps. Kamlager-Dove and Vargas introduced legislation to block federal agencies from sharing personal data with ICE and DHS for immigration enforcement. Rep. Kamlager-Dove's Limiting ICE's Nationwide Encroachment (LINE) Actprohibits HHS and CMS from sharing Medicaid data, while Rep. Vargas's Home Together Actstops HUD from sharing data.

"Less than a year into his presidency, Donald Trump has slashed funding for essential programs, terrorized communities with lawless ICE raids, and now wants to use data from the very programs he gutted to track down our immigrant neighbors? It's a hell no from me," said Rep. Kamlager-Dove. "I'm proud to partner with Rep. Vargas in introducing legislation to block HHS, CMS, and HUD from data sharing with ICE. Healthcare or housing should never be conditioned on immigration status or fear of government surveillance, and fear of immigration enforcement should not stop people from seeking these necessities."
