Investors usually assume a lower price-to-earnings multiple signals a cheaper stock. Paycom Software (PAYC) puts that rule to the test. Investors paid a multiple of 58.9 for each dollar of Paycom's profit three years ago, yet today that figure is 22.2. So is Paycom stock cheaper than it was three years ago?
Paycom Stock Fell, But Its Multiple Fell Much More
How Much Has Paycom's Profit Grown?
Paycom's profit over the latest twelve months reached $0.49 billion, compared to $0.32 billion three years earlier. That equals about one and a half times as much. The table details each year.
| Twelve months to | Net income | Change in a year | Price-to-earnings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jun 2021 | $0.2 billion | - | 125 |
| Jun 2022 | $0.2 billion | +35% | 71 |
| Jun 2023 | $0.3 billion | +38% | 59 |
| Jun 2024 | $0.5 billion | +49% | 17 |
| Jun 2025 | $0.4 billion | -12% | 31 |
| Jun 2026 | $0.5 billion | +17% | 12 |
| Today | $0.5 billion | 22 |
Net income is for the trailing twelve months. Each price-to-earnings multiple is the market value at that date over that net income.
Paycom sells human resource software to its clients, and most of its sales come from recurring and other revenue. Profit grew faster than sales over these three years, meaning Paycom now keeps 22.8% of its sales as profit, against 20.3% three years ago. Management stated on the fiscal Q2 2026 call that the company continues to benefit from its automation initiatives and from efficiencies across its processes and its workforce.
Does A Lower Multiple Make Paycom Cheaper?
Not by itself. A better approach examines what investors purchased when the multiple was high, alongside how much of that anticipated growth actually materialized. Paycom's multiple reached 167.3 in September 2021, marking its highest in the last five years. Profit today stands at nearly three times what it was then. Investors paid the most for each dollar of profit when there was far less of it, because they expected it to grow, and it did. The path has not been smooth. The multiple fell to 11.8 at the end of June 2026, then rose to 22.2 as the stock rallied while profit held steady
Buyers pay less for each dollar of Paycom's profit today than an investor did three years ago. Yet that earlier buyer was paying for growth that has since happened, and it still was not enough: the stock is down 26% because the growth came in below what a multiple of 58.9 assumed. A lower multiple appearing after the growth has arrived does not constitute a discount on its own.
Where Is Paycom On That Curve Now?
Paycom's profit is growing again following a year when it fell. Profit rose 17% in the twelve months to June 2026, after falling 12% in the preceding twelve months. Profit also expanded faster than sales, which rose 9%.
Paycom's multiple currently sits at 22.2, making it close to the S&P 500's 22.5. The one critical metric to watch starting with the next quarterly report is how fast Paycom's profit grows from here, measured against the latest year's pace.
How To Act On PAYC?
Now you know PAYC better. And that's our purpose: to make you informed before you invest your money. However, making a bet on a single stock carries its own risks.
There is a smarter choice. Since its inception, the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio has beaten the benchmark that combines the three major indices - the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. And it did so without taking the concentrated risk that comes with do-it-yourself stock picking.
