Another round of grants to local governments will boost Western Australia's bushfire mitigation program and help protect communities across the State during high-threat periods.
More than $5.1 million has been allocated by the Cook Labor Government through the Bushfire Mitigation Activity Fund for initiatives including planned burns, establishing or maintaining firebreaks, and reducing fuel loads that pose a significant risk to families, businesses and infrastructure.
Local governments undertake the various mitigation strategies on State-owned land.
There were 41 local governments that received funding for 752 bushfire mitigation treatments.
The shires of Coolgardie, Cunderdin, Derby/West Kimberley, Halls Creek, Perenjori, Wongan-Ballidu, and Wyndham East Kimberley are first-time recipients of the grants.
Since this government came into office in 2017, a total of $74.9 million in funding has been allocated to 83 local governments to undertake 10,241 mitigation treatments.
Comments attributed to Emergency Services Minister David Michael:
"In the past 12 months there have been more than 5,100 bushfires across Western Australia, burning through around 7.5 million hectares - greater than the size of Tasmania.
"As more than 93 per cent of WA is bushfire prone, it is vital we work with local governments to undertake mitigation activities that will limit the impacts on our landscape.
"By reducing the scale of bushfires, we are also helping our valiant firefighters get control of incidents before they put lives, homes, and businesses at risk."
