Public information session planned ahead of replacement of 8th Avenue Bridge

After almost a century of service, the 8^th Avenue Bridge is scheduled to be replaced starting in 2027. The public is invited to attend an open house later this month to learn more.

The informational meeting will take place Wednesday, Aug. 26 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the City Services Center, 500 15^th Ave SW, in Time Check Hall. The City's Flood System Program Manager will share a 10-minute presentation at 4:45 p.m. and again at 5:45 p.m. The presentation will be the same both times, so residents can attend whichever session works best for them. City staff will be available between presentations to answer questions about the project.

The existing 89-year-old 8^th Avenue Bridge over the Cedar River will be demolished and replaced with an elevated cable-stayed bridge. The new bridge will be 710 feet in length and feature four lanes of traffic as well as 14-foot pedestrian paths on both sides. Floodwall will be integrated into the abutment on both sides of the Cedar River.

The profile of the new bridge is approximately 15 feet above the existing bridge. It also features a center pier that rises 150 feet above the bridge. The new design will allow the bridge to stay open during flood events, minimizing impacts on residents, school closures, and commerce. This will make it a critical component of the Flood Control System.

• WILL STREETS BE CLOSED DURING CONSTRUCTION? Yes, 8th Avenue Bridge will be closed to through traffic the duration of the project from Valor Way SW to 2^nd Street SE. A signed detour route will be in place during construction. Access to Businesses will remain open at all times. Temporary connections will be provided as limited access accommodations are necessary.
• WILL I HAVE ACCESS TO MY PROPERTY? Yes, the staging will allow necessary access to adjacent properties. Please plan for extra commuting time when the detour is in place. Parking in Lot 44 will move south away from 8^th Avenue during the duration of the project.
• WHY IS THIS WORK NECESSARY? This replacement work is necessary to improve the safety and connection of Cedar Rapids during flood events. It also helps to preserve structural integrity and maximize the service life of 8^th Avenue.
• WILL THERE BE COMMUNICATIONS DURING CONSTRUCTION? Yes, the City will post updates on their website during construction for the public. For properties directly adjoining the project site, the City will take email addresses during the public meeting.
