National Day of Mourning for Bondi terror attack victims

  • National Day of Mourning to acknowledge the victims of the Bondi Beach terrorist attack
  • Cook Government to light up landmarks in white and fly flags at half-mast
  • Premier to attend service at St George's Cathedral Perth in a show of unity and remembrance

The Cook Government will acknowledge the 15 victims of the Bondi Beach terrorist attack and all those affected as part of the National Day of Mourning.

The day's theme - Light will win, a gathering of unity and remembrance - has been determined by Rabbi Yehoram Ulman, the spiritual leader of the Chabad community in Bondi.

As part of this, 15 pillars of light will be projected into the night sky at 15 locations across the country from dusk until midnight. The installations will be displayed at Parliament House and at Albany Town Hall as Western Australians stand in solidarity with the Bondi community and communities across the country.

In further recognition of this theme, monuments across WA will be lit up in white including Optus Stadium, Matagarup Bridge, Mount Street Bridge, Sky Ribbon Bridge, Joondalup Drive Bridge, Graham Farmer Freeway Tunnel and Great Northern Highway Port Hedland Interchange Bridge. Flags outside WA Government offices will be flown at half-mast as a sign of respect.

The Premier will join the Governor of Western Australia Chris Dawson, WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch and the President of the Jewish Community Council of Western Australia Dr Michael Levitt AM at a service at St George's Cathedral in Perth in a show of unity and remembrance.

The Anglican Archbishop of Perth, The Most Reverend Kay Goldsworthy AO DD, will lead the service, which will remember and pay respects to the victims and all those who have been impacted.

The Bondi Beach Attack Memorial Event, organised by the Chabad of Bondi, can also be viewed live at 4.01pm WA time on the Chabad of Bondi YouTube channel.

Condolence messages can also be shared through the Bondi Beach online condolence book.

Western Australians are also invited to observe a minute of silence at 4.01pm AWST to remember the innocent people whose lives and futures were stolen.

Comments attributed to Premier Roger Cook:

"My thoughts remain with the family and friends of the 15 people who lost their lives, those who were injured, and those who risked their lives to save others.

"Today is a chance for all Western Australians to reflect and recognise the impact of this tragedy and stand in solidarity with the Jewish community.

"It is also a time to come together and consider our collective role in ensuring every Western Australian feels supported and safe.

"My government is committed to building safe and inclusive communities, where Western Australians can be proud of who they are, regardless of their religious, ethnic or cultural background.

"There is no place in Australia for anti-Semitism. It will not be tolerated in WA, and we will use every tactic and measure at our disposal to protect the community."
