A recent post by Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy discussing the government shutdown and the expiration of SNAP benefits this weekend has gone viral, reaching over 211,000 people across social media platforms. The post highlights the urgent reality faced by thousands of families who are struggling to make ends meet as federal programs hang in the balance.
"Government shutdowns aren't just political battles in Washington; they have real consequences for people in our communities," said Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy. "When SNAP benefits lapse, families skip meals. When workers are furloughed, paychecks stop. These aren't partisan issues; they're human ones."
The overwhelming response to the post reflects growing frustration across the political spectrum and underscores the need for cooperation in Congress. County Executive McCoy is calling on federal lawmakers of both parties to come together immediately to restore government funding, protect food assistance programs, and prevent further hardship for working families.
"People are tired of dysfunction. They want leaders who will sit down, roll up their sleeves, and find a bipartisan path forward. We owe it to every parent worrying about how to feed their kids this weekend to get this done," said Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy.
As of the end of September, there are 17,386 active households receiving SNAP benefits in Albany County. That's food for nearly 30,000 friends, colleagues, neighbors, children who won't be getting money to pay for food. Albany County has launched a countywide food drive to help ensure food pantries can stock their shelves. County Executive McCoy is calling on residents who can to lend a hand, whether by donating nonperishable goods or spreading the word. Collection bins are located in all Albany County buildings, including:
o 112 State Street
o The Albany County Department of Social Services
o The Albany County Department of Health/Mental Health
o The Albany County Department of Probation
o Shaker Place Rehabilitation & Nursing Center
o The Lawson Lake Visitor Center
o 420 Madison Avenue (at the former College of Saint Rose)
o and all Department of Public Works' subdivision garages.
Albany County is reaffirming their commitment to continue speaking out on behalf of families, workers, and seniors affected by the shutdown, emphasizing that government must be responsive to the needs of those it serves not driven by politics or gridlock. Together, we can ensure that no family in our community goes hungry during this difficult time.
