Community Crimes detectives have arrested Nashvillian Charles Hunt Jr., 32, on a charge of felony theft for stealing 141 cast iron water meter covers (belonging to Metro Water Services) from residential properties since the first of the year. The collective value of the cast iron covers is estimated at $9,250.
The investigation, led by Detective Carney White, shows that Hunt stole the cast iron covers within a two-mile radius of Maury Street. He would then use the covers to add weight to loads of scrap tin he sold to a local recycling company during 17 transactions over the past few months. The vehicle Hunt used in the thefts, a 2012 Chevrolet Traverse, was caught on camera by residential surveillance systems. Detective White identified Hunt as the suspect after contacting the recycling company as he worked to determine where the water meter covers were going.
Hunt is jailed in lieu of $10,000 bond.
