City of Pearland Appoints Derek Dunham as Chief of Police

The City of Pearland is proud to announce the appointment of Assistant Chief Derek Dunham as the new Chief of Police for the Pearland Police Department. Dunham was sworn in on June 15. His leadership has been shaped by day-to-day work in the department and a strong connection to the community. His appointment follows the retirement of former chief, Johnny Spires, who served the Pearland Police Department for 36 years.

"Chief Dunham is a steady leader and has earned respect for his clear judgment and the way he guides the department through everyday challenges," said City Manager Trent Epperson. "He's known for building strong working relationships and guiding teams through complex issues, which has prepared him well to step into the role of Chief."

As Chief of Police, Chief Dunham will oversee all departmental operations, including strategic planning, community engagement initiatives, and continued advancement of public safety programs. He will lead the department's divisions and guide the agency in its mission to serve and protect Pearland's growing and diverse community.

Previously, Chief Dunham served as the Support Bureau Assistant Chief, where he was responsible for the Support Services and Administrative Divisions. In this role, he managed operations in budgeting, Animal Services, Dispatch, Jail, Records, Quartermaster, School Resource Officers, Community Outreach, Public Information, Recruiting, Training, Professional Standards (Internal Affairs), Honor Guard Unit, policy development, and accreditation.

"I am honored to have the opportunity to lead the Pearland Police Department," said Chief Dunham. "Serving this community has been one of the greatest privileges of my career, and I look forward to continuing our work in strengthening relationships, supporting our staff, and enhancing the safety and quality of life in Pearland."

Chief Dunham holds a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from Stephen F. Austin State University and a Master of Public Administration from Sam Houston State University. He is also a certified Master Peace Officer.

A graduate of the Bill Blackwood Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas' Leadership Command College (Class #89) and of the Senior Management Institute for Police (Class #96), Chief Dunham also completed the University of Virginia's LEAD program through the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service. His leadership has earned him distinguished recognition, including Supervisor of the Year and the J.C. Doyle Leadership Award.

"Pearland means a great deal to me, and I'm honored to step into this role," Chief Dunham said. "Together with our officers and staff, I want to keep moving forward on the efforts that help us stay connected with the community and provide dependable service."
