WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Ala.) joined America's Newsroom with Dana Perino and Bill Hemmer on Fox News. She discussed President Trump's leadership in negotiations with Iran, as well as the importance of reauthorizing FISA Section 702 after its expiration due to Senate Democrats' obstruction.
On the Memorandum of Understanding with Iran:
"Look, in my opinion this is 47 years too late. I am grateful for the President's leadership. I'm grateful that he's actually holding Iran accountable. It will be good for us, though, to know what those (terms) are, and particularly with regards to nuclear ambitions or lack thereof, from Iran. We've heard from the President from the very beginning that he will not allow Iran to enrich uranium, that they will never be able to get a nuclear weapon. Seeing those details, being able to put those in front of Congress will be important so we can be unified and making sure that we take down the greatest threat for terrorism across the globe, and that is Iran."
On holding Iran accountable with the long-term goal of achieving peace in the Middle East:
"You cannot trust [Iran]. We never have been able to. And that is why making sure that the deterrent that President Trump has created over the last hundred days, it was there … [N]ow we know that their naval fleet, much of that is at the bottom of the ocean. We know that … Operation Epic Fury … was able to … really cripple their enrichment ability … The strait is open. We know that much of their missile capacity is down. You look at what we're talking about with the regime. Obviously, we are down three layers into that with many of their top people being taken out by President Trump and … our courageous men and women in uniform. So, I think that deterrence is there.
"But I think this is an exercise of don't trust but verify. So, I think we come to the table with that in mind, but know that the long-term goal of this is to have sustainability of peace in that region, because we know that's what's better for Americans, for the safety and security of our country, for the prosperity of the people here on our shores, a stable Middle East and Iran, without the ability to enrich nuclear capabilities is what's best for all of us … There'll be a lot of questions, but I know that President Trump is the best dealmaker that there is on the planet, so I trust his ability to get this done."
On Senate Democrats letting FISA Section 702 expire:
"So first off, let's go back to the fact that the reason that FISA has expired is because of Democrats. Democrats played politics with people's lives. Here we have the World Cup, Dana, across our nation, where we're hosting all of these events and people. And yet Democrats decided that they were going to play politics and shut down the eyes of our intelligence community. That is 100% on them …
"What President Trump is saying is, look, let's stop playing politics. Let's get a good person in for U.S. attorney and then let's move Jay Clayton forward. I know that the Senate has several processes it has to go through. I hope that we'll continue working through those so that we can get President Trump his Director of National Intelligence as soon as possible. But Democrats have got to stop playing politics. They've got to actually do the work of the American people, and what we're hearing right here is them playing games once again."
