STATEMENT: US Midterms Put Economic Security and Energy Affordability in the Spotlight

November 4, 2026

WASHINGTON (November 4, 2026) - The United States held its midterm elections on November 3, with voters deciding control of the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate, alongside gubernatorial, state legislative and local races across the country. The results will shape the political landscape for energy and climate policy at the federal, state and local levels.

Following is a statement from David Widawsky, Director of World Resources Institute United States:

"The message from voters is clear: Americans want greater economic security, relief from rising costs and an energy system that works for them. This election put a bright spotlight on how this country's outdated energy system and dependence on fossil fuels leave families and businesses exposed to unaffordable price shocks.

"American consumers are bearing the burden of rising electricity prices as rapid data center growth stretches the capacity of the aging US grid, while government actions have hindered the deployment of clean and affordable energy. From farmers in the Midwest to truckers at the pump to families struggling with household bills, Americans are feeling the strain.

"The new Congress has an opportunity to deliver on issues that cut across party lines like sky-high energy costs, data centers, promising energy technology innovations like geothermal and industrial batteries, and building a modern, resilient grid. These are practical solutions that can put money back in Americans' pockets, strengthen the economy and lay the groundwork for more ambitious action.

"Some of the biggest opportunities for progress may come at the state and city level. New governors, state legislatures and mayors have the power to move quickly on solutions that address the needs of their constituents: strengthening local economies, creating jobs and lowering bills. From ensuring data centers provide real benefits to communities to expanding clean energy, modernizing the grid, enabling affordable and accessible housing, and improving public transit, state and local leaders can walk-the-talk that climate action delivers real benefits for people."
