New Frontiers in Heart Valve Disease Treatment

Heart valve disease affects millions in the US. The four heart valves: aortic, mitral, pulmonary and tricuspid, ensure that blood flows properly through the heart. Valve disease includes the following conditions:

• Stenosis, a valve that does not open properly
• Regurgitation, a leaky valve
• Prolapse, floppy valve leaflets that don't close properly
• Atresia, a congenital heart defect.

Valve disease can stress the heart, and if not treated, can cause serious life-threatening complications.

Fortunately, options exist for valve repair and replacement. Traditionally the heart's valves were repaired and replaced through open surgery. Now, minimally invasive, catheter-based options are available.
