Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) stock rose 8.9% on October 29, 2026, a day after the company released its fiscal Q3 2026 report. The S&P 500 slipped 0.3% during the same session. The jump followed a quarter that beat sales forecasts but missed analysts' earnings estimates, from a chain that plans to open 350 to 370 restaurants in 2026. So if you are weighing whether the stock is still worth owning, what does Chipotle need from its existing restaurants as it keeps opening new ones?
Chipotle Needs More Visits To Offset Its New Restaurants
Management said on the fiscal Q3 2026 call that Chipotle needs transactions at existing locations to grow by about 1 point just to offset the impact of new openings. The company offered that figure when asked what level of sales growth would keep margins steady. Management noted that only above that pace does about 40% of the extra sales start to flow through to profit.
While comparable restaurant sales rose 2.1% in fiscal Q3 2026, transactions grew only 0.8%, falling short of that pace. Management's measure of what its restaurants keep from sales, the restaurant-level margin, fell 120 basis points from a year earlier to 23.3%.
Sales came in ahead of forecasts, according to Reuters, but earnings per share fell 8.0% short of analysts' estimates. Even so, Chipotle stock's one-day rise was far larger than the gains of 2.2% to 2.9% recorded at McDonald's, Starbucks and Yum Brands over the same session.
Is Chipotle's Lower Margin More Than One Quarter?
Yes: Chipotle's operating margin has slipped over the past two years, and management expects its restaurant-level margin to be lower again in fiscal Q4 2026. The company posted a 14.6% operating margin in fiscal Q3 2026, compared with 16.6% a year earlier. That margin measured 16.9% over the twelve months to September 2025, down from 17.7% a year before, before falling again to 14.9% in the twelve months to September 2026.
For fiscal Q4 2026, management expects a restaurant-level margin of just under 22%, running roughly 150 basis points lower than a year earlier. Setting aside extra marketing behind the return of smoked brisket and a one-time gift card benefit a year ago, management attributed the rest of that decline to sales volume. So the margin, like the quarter, depends on how many more orders Chipotle's restaurants take.
What Did Chipotle Say About The Months Ahead?
Management kept its openings plan intact and noted that transactions turned positive again following a soft start to October. The 2026 openings guide carries the same midpoint as in July. Looking to 2027, Chipotle expects to open 340 to 360 company-owned restaurants in the U.S. and Canada, plus around 15 to 25 restaurants outside the U.S. and Canada.
Management expects comparable sales to grow around 2% during fiscal Q4 2026. Executives said comparable sales could be growing at 3% to 4% by the end of the year, and pointed to the return of smoked brisket in November. The company did not issue a comparable sales guide for 2027, explaining it was too early and that guidance would arrive on the next call.
When Chipotle next reports earnings, expected in February 2027, transaction growth for fiscal Q4 2026 is the figure to watch. Until transactions grow by more than the roughly 1 point needed to offset new openings, the case for owning the stock rests on management's outlook rather than on its results.
