Luján Statement on Senate Republicans Voting to Block Consideration of War Powers Resolution

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) issued the following statement after Senate Republicans voted to block consideration of a bipartisan War Powers Resolution that earned bipartisan support last week:

"Just last week, the Senate voted with bipartisan support to advance a war powers resolution. Now, under threat from President Trump, Senate Republicans have reversed course. Instead of allowing Congress to reassert its constitutional authority over matters of war, they voted to block further consideration of a bipartisan resolution that would have prevented President Trump from taking further military action in Venezuela without congressional authorization.

"President Trump and Congressional Republicans are not putting America first. These actions put our servicemembers in danger, bring us closer to another needless war, and undermine Congress' constitutional authority."
