OHR January Newsletter - Director's Message

I hope you all had a peaceful and joyful holiday season! As we begin the new year, I also want to acknowledge those in our community who may have faced hardship or were unable to celebrate in the same way. In the midst of festivities and fresh starts, I encourage each of us to continue looking out for our neighbors, particularly those who may be struggling. Acts of kindness and solidarity - big or small - remind us of the strength and compassion that define our District.

Looking back on 2025, it was a year of both unprecedented challenges and remarkable achievements. Together, we confronted uncertainties, demonstrated resilience to support our community, and ensured that our office continued its vital work protecting civil rights. These accomplishments are a testament to what we can achieve when we remain committed to our mission, even in times of darkness.

As we step into 2026, we know that new challenges will emerge. Yet I remain hopeful and confident that, as a community, we will rise to meet them just as we did last year. Our commitment to safeguarding human rights, advocating for vulnerable populations, and promoting equitable practices across the District remains as strong as ever. Every action we take is guided by the principle that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and fairness.

In line with this commitment to outreach and civic engagement, I am excited to share that we will be hosting a series of Office Hours sessions in partnership with the Mayor's Office on Returning Citizen Affairs (MORCA). These sessions will offer residents the opportunity to engage directly with city leaders, ask questions, and learn more about their rights and resources available to them. Please find more details below.

As we embark on this new year, I encourage each of us to carry forward the lessons of resilience, empathy, and shared responsibility. Together, we will continue to protect civil rights and create a District where every person can thrive. I am confident that, with your continued partnership and engagement, 2026 will be another year of progress and meaningful impact for all residents of our beautiful city.

In Solidarity,

Elizabeth Fox-Solomon
