Sunset Boulevard in the City of West Hollywood Reopens Following Last Week’s LADWP Water Main Break

The City of West Hollywood is pleased to announce that Sunset Boulevard reopened to traffic on Friday, July 24, 2026, at approximately 11 p.m., following completion of work by crews from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) after last week's significant water main break at Sunset Boulevard and Holloway Drive.

The reopening marks an important milestone after more than a week of around-the-clock emergency response and coordination among multiple agencies. While the emergency road repairs allow Sunset Boulevard to reopen, the current street paving is temporary. LADWP crews will return in the coming weeks to complete permanent street paving and restoration, which is anticipated to require intermittent lane reductions and sidewalk closures. Additional information will be shared as work schedules are determined.

The water main break, which occurred during the early morning hours of Thursday, July 16, 2026, involved a major 36-inch LADWP water transmission trunk line beneath Sunset Boulevard. Throughout the incident, LADWP confirmed that drinking water remained safe and available to LADWP customers, and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department confirmed that no injuries were reported.

From the outset of the incident, the City of West Hollywood worked in close partnership with the City of Los Angeles, the County of Los Angeles, LADWP, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, the Los Angeles County Fire Department, Metro, Athens Services, the Metropolitan Water District, neighboring agencies, and numerous additional partners. Approximately 250 LADWP personnel were activated during the peak of 24-hour-a-day operations.

Throughout, the City of West Hollywood and its community safety partners coordinated traffic management, resident and business outreach, incident communications, temporary parking enforcement changes, community meetings with impacted residents, dissemination of LADWP claims information, enhanced public safety, and ongoing public updates through the City's social media channels, @wehocity, and a dedicated webpage at www.weho.org/watermainbreak.
