Scleroderma Awareness Month and Scleroderma Awareness Day

By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:

Scleroderma Awareness Month and Scleroderma Awareness Day

WHEREAS, scleroderma, also known as systemic sclerosis, is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by excessive production and accumulation of collagen in the skin and internal organs, resulting in the formation of scar-like tissue; and

WHEREAS, while the cause of scleroderma remains unknown and there is currently no known cure, a wide range of treatments are available that help manage symptoms and reduce the risk of complications; and

WHEREAS, diagnosis is often challenging and may take three to five years for individuals with scleroderma to receive an accurate diagnosis; and

WHEREAS, patient advocates, caregivers, researchers, and organizations work collaboratively to raise awareness, provide support for those affected, and advance research toward improved treatments and, ultimately, a cure; and

WHEREAS, promoting awareness among healthcare professionals and the public helps advance efforts toward earlier detection and diagnosis, resulting in improved patient outcomes; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia acknowledges residents of our community living with scleroderma who demonstrate strength and resilience as they navigate complex medical challenges; and

WHEREAS, Scleroderma Awareness Month and Scleroderma Awareness Day provide an opportunity to increase awareness, promote understanding, and encourage support for individuals affected by scleroderma;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Abigail D. Spanberger, Governor, do hereby recognize June 2026, as SCLERODERMA AWARENESS MONTH and June 29, 2026,as SCLERODERMA AWARENESS DAY in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call these observances to the attention of all our citizens.
