We are honored to welcome our neighbors from across Alaska to Anchorage for the AFN Annual Convention. The largest annual representative gathering in the United States of Native peoples, the Convention brings a swell of activity and connection to Anchorage, the traditional lands of the Dena'ina Athabascan people.
This year's convention marks one year since Typhoon Halong devastated communities on Alaska's western coast. The Municipality joined many partners to respond to the disaster, welcoming refugees to find safety and warmth in our community while the storm cleared. One year later, many families are still displaced, and their path home is long and uncertain, even as they grow roots together here in our community.
To our neighbors from across the state who are staying in Anchorage - whether you're here this week for AFN or spending some time here until you can return home - we are grateful you are here. Chin'an gu ninyu.
