San Juan Regional Medical Center Now Offering Endobronchial Ultrasound to Diagnose Lung Conditions

San Juan Regional Medical Center is pleased to announce a significant advancement in the diagnosis and staging of thoracic diseases with the addition of Endobronchial Ultrasound technology. Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS) is an advanced outpatient procedure that combines bronchoscopy with real-time ultrasound imaging. This allows for minimally invasive, highly accurate sampling of lymph nodes and surrounding structures without the need for more invasive surgical procedures. The first procedure utilizing this new technology was performed by pulmonologist Dr. Joseph Beier at San Juan Regional Medical Center on May 28.

"The introduction of EBUS into our medical community enhances our ability to deliver timely, precise diagnoses while reducing patient risk, recovery time, and overall healthcare costs," said Dr. Beier.

During the outpatient procedure, a pulmonologist uses a thin, flexible tube equipped with a tiny camera and ultrasound probe. The scope is inserted through the mouth and into the lungs to provide real-time, detailed imaging of the lungs and nearby lymph nodes so the physician can collect tissue samples. A pathologist is present during the procedure to examine biopsy samples as they are taken. This improves overall accuracy and helps to shorten the duration of the procedure. In suspected lung cancer cases, EBUS allows for immediate, precise cancer diagnosis and staging. It's also used as a diagnostic tool for other types of lung illnesses, including inflammation or infection.
