Many are busy with Christmas and holiday celebrations this time of year.
For those of you wanting to know how the city's road construction projects could affect your drive this season, we'll begin December's Broken Arrow in Motion with some information about our street projects.
Watch Broken Arrow in Motion with City Manager Michael Spurgeon.
Over at the Houston Street Widening Project, between Garnett Road and Olive Avenue, the contractor has completed the concrete work on all driveways. Now they are forming the 10-foot trail. Next week, we expect they will begin laying asphalt on the north side of Houston Street.
Now on to Phase 1 of the Aspen Avenue Improvements. The contractor is working on the rehabilitation project on the east side of Aspen Avenue, south of Jasper Street (also known as 131st St.). They have begun applying oil to the fresh surface. This will be followed by a type of road fabric, which will improve the roadway's surface over the long term. Next, they will begin laying the asphalt, depending on the weather.
Continuing with updates, the Houston Street Widening Project has seen the contractor complete concrete work on all driveways. Formation of the 10-foot trail is now underway, and asphalt laying on the North side of Houston Street is expected to begin next week.
For the College Addition Asphalt improvement Project, all milling operations and the full-depth road tear-out are complete, and asphalt patching is finished. The contractor will lay the final asphalt layer this week, aiming to finish by mid-December. Cleanup will follow and is estimated to last about a week, so completion is projected by late December.
At the Carriage Crossing Improvement project, asphalt work on Fargo Street, north of 13th Street, is finished. The contractor has just completed the storm pipe replacement and is now laying new concrete panels and sidewalks, with this phase expected to be completed by January. The overall project remains on track for completion before spring.
Over on the east side of town, let's talk about Phase 2 of the New Orleans Street Widening Project. This project is part of the public/private partnership with Venu for the Sunset in Broken Arrow Amphitheater Project. Crossland Heavy Contractors has closed the intersection at New Orleans and 209th Street East Avenue. They are working on the demolition phase. The contractor expects to reopen 209th East Avenue in time for students to return to Rosewood Elementary after the Christmas break. The rest of the project should finish soon after. We've also installed a pre-engineered metal storage building at Events Park for storage and maintenance. After the first of the year, we'll begin the facility's interior build-out. This will include the construction of two offices, a break room, and bathrooms.
Shifting focus, here are updates on ongoing water and sewer infrastructure projects.
At Oak Crest, construction on the new waterline is nearly finished, and the new sewer line is about 70 percent complete. The crew will continue concrete and cleanup work through December and January. New driveways are projected to be finished by February 2026.
Elsewhere, Broken Arrow's favorite infrastructure project-the new Elevated Water Storage Tank at Lynn Lane and New Orleans-continues to progress. If you attended the State of the City luncheon with the Broken Arrow Chamber or watched it online, you likely saw Assistant City Manager Kenny Schwab and Engineering and Construction Director Charlie Bright reassure everyone that the new water tower is straight, despite some online inquiries!
Currently, the contractor is coating the inside of the tank while pouring the slab floor for the tower's pedestal, work expected to finish by late December. Construction of the pedestal's second story is scheduled for January, and the tank raising is projected for February.
Also, near New Orleans Street, the contractor is hammering through hard shale and laying pipe between two manholes. This work continues as part of Phase 2 of the County Line Trunk Sewer project. The contractor is also boring under County Line Road, north of New Orleans, as the project continues.
In South Broken Arrow at Arrow Forge Innovation District, the contractor is sodding behind curbs and will continue to lay asphalt as weather allows. Asphalt work is scheduled for completion by January, weather permitting.
