Romania: PES stands with PSD and calls for a stable pro-European government focused on people

Following the vote on the motion of no confidence, the Party of European Socialists (PES) stands firmly alongside its Romanian member party Partidul Social Democrat (PSD) and supports the swift formation of a pro-European government with renewed leadership.

At a moment of political uncertainty, Romania needs clarity, stability and leadership that delivers for its citizens. A fully operational government is essential to secure European funding, ensure institutional continuity, protect jobs, safeguard social cohesion and respond to ongoing cost-of-living pressures.

The PES stresses that the next government must place social fairness at the heart of its agenda, prioritising public investment, strengthening social protection and ensuring that economic recovery benefits all. Moving away from austerity-driven approaches will be key to preventing deeper inequalities and rebuilding public trust.

Ensuring stability also requires a constructive and responsible approach from political actors. Building a durable majority must be based on dialogue, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to deliver concrete improvements in people's daily lives.

PES Secretary General, Giacomo Filibeck, said:

"Romania needs a government that delivers stability and real improvements in people's lives. This is not just about political agreements, it is about protecting citizens from economic uncertainty, strengthening social fairness, and restoring trust in democratic institutions. Social-democrats stand ready to support a path forward that puts people first."

The priority now must be to restore confidence, ensure predictability, and deliver tangible results for citizens across Romania.
