Create a military property reuse want list

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. -

Defense Logistics Agency property reuse customers can specify exactly what they need for their organization, avoid procurement costs, and make taxpayer dollars go further by creating a customized "RTD Want List."

As DoW's official source for excess military equipment and used personal items, DLA Disposition Services and its Reutilization, Transfer, and Donation program can serve as a no-cost supply source for military units and non-defense customers to help them meet critical material needs not covered by their current budgets.

The agency offers a huge and constantly evolving inventory of property available for screening via RTDWeb, and one of the best and most efficient ways for a unit or organization to snag needed supplies is by creating a personalized RTD Want List. There are only a few simple steps required to set up a wish list and start receiving notifications when the items property screeners are seeking become available. It's a straightforward process that can save reuse customers valuable time, effort - and definitely money.

Think of the RTD Want List as a personal shopping assistant for excess military equipment. Instead of regularly browsing through pages of the agency's rotating excess property inventory, screeners can tell RTDWeb what is needed and receive an automatic alert when those items get put on DLA's shelves. It's like setting up a Google Alert, but for cost-free excess material.

Why an RTD Want List?

*A time saver. No more endless scrolling through RTDWeb.

*A money saver. The Department of War does not charge participants to acquire reutilized, transferred, or donated property (although, some donation recipients pay state-assessed fees).

*An efficiency raiser. Participants are notified about available property immediately, giving their organization a competitive edge in making first-come-first-served requests for items.

*A waste reducer. Reutilizing existing property is a great way to support sustainability efforts and extend the life of equipment that taxpayers already paid for.

So how can an excess property customer create an RTD Want List?

Access the System: First, a screener must be registered and approved for RTDWeb access in the DLA Account Management and Provisioning System, or AMPS.

Search for property. The DLA Disposition Services Search for Property and Want Lists pages provide instructions on how to query for specific supply groups, classes, or individual items and add them to a "DOD Shopping Cart."

Add items to the RTD Want List: Items can be added to the unit or organization's want list in several ways:

  • By National Stock Number: If the NSN of the needed item is known, simply enter it into the designated field. Up to 70,000 NIINs or NSNs can be uploaded simultaneously.
  • By Item Name: If a user doesn't know the NSN, they can use a smart word search to browse for items. Be as specific as possible to narrow down the results (e.g., instead of "chair," try "ergonomic office chair").
  • By Federal Supply Class: Users can browse by FSC to find items within a specific category.

Set Preferences: Property can be evaluated or sorted through some additional parameters like:

  • Condition Codes: Recipients can determine what they'll consider as the acceptable condition of the item (e.g., new, used, or repairable).
  • Geographic Location: Recipients can limit their searches to specific DLA Disposition Services locations or regions.
  • Quantity: Specify the material quantity desired.

Generate the list: If users are satisfied with their search criteria and parameters, they can click "scheduled," which will automatically generate email notifications based on the specified search criteria.

Manage the list: Regularly review and update a RTD Want List to ensure it remains accurate and reflects current needs.

Creating a DLA Disposition Services RTD Want List is a simple way to tap into an additional DLA supply stream and potentially save significant amounts of money through reuse. Questions specific to the DLA Disposition Services RTD program can be emailed to [email protected].
