Residents in selected areas of Doncaster are being encouraged to champion their communities by volunteering to help with decision making around local spending of a newly awarded funding stream.

As part of the UK Government Pride in Place Programme, local Neighbourhood Boards are being set up in Conisbrough & Denaby, Mexborough and New Rossington, who have each been allocated £20m of national funding (£2m per area, per year for the next ten years), with the council looking for independent volunteers to chair each board.

With Pride in Place, residents, businesses, and community groups will deliver real improvements that matter to local people. This is led by local people and backed by the UK government.

Each area will have their own Neighbourhood Board, which will put local people at the centre of defining their area's future, bringing together residents, local businesses, grassroots campaigners, workplace representatives, faith leaders, and community organisations.

Involving their community, the board will generate a vision for the future of their area and set out a pathway to deliver that over the course of the 10-year programme (and beyond).

Communities will be able to spend the funding on what matters most to them - from improvements to pavements and high streets to investing in culture and green spaces.

In order to deliver this programme of investment across these three areas, the council is looking to appoint volunteers who will become independent chairs - someone who can bring their community together and share ideas in an open and collaborative way. Even if they are new to this kind of work, volunteers can apply if they live in the area or hold a prominent role in their community.

Mayor of Doncaster, Ros Jones said: "This is an incredible opportunity for someone with a real passion for their local area to make a real difference. These boards will have to submit a plan to Government about how they propose to use the funding, and this role will be key to ensuring that the funding meets the needs of the community.

"If you are from these areas, even if you haven't held a role like this before, get in touch. Your community will really benefit from your valuable insight, and you could really make a difference by recommending projects that could benefit the entirety of your community."

To apply for the role, a CV (including two references), together with a covering letter (no more than a 1,000 words) should be sent to [email protected]or by post to Pride in Place, c/o City of Doncaster Council, Civic Office, Waterdale, Doncaster, DN1 3BU, no later than Wednesday 18th March.
