State Rep. Chris Miller Files Legislation to Allow Illinois State Police to Deport Illegal Immigrants Who Are Convicted of Crimes

SPRINGFIELD, IL…State Representative Chris Miller (R-Hindsboro) has filed legislation that gives the Illinois State Police the authority to deport criminal illegal immigrants. House Bill 4237, also known as Katie's Law, was filed to expand punishment to criminal illegal immigrants who commit crimes in Illinois. Rep. Miller said he had help creating this bill from Joe Abraham, who lost his daughter Katie earlier this year because of an illegal Guatemalan man who was driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Miller said more needs to do done to keep our communities safe from dangerous illegal immigrants.

"Katie Abraham had a bright future ahead of her and would still be with us today if Illinois did not have radical sanctuary state policies," Miller said. "JB Pritzker has made Illinois less safe and communities more vulnerable to criminal illegal immigrants who put Illinois citizen's lives at risk. I'm honored to have Joe's support on this bill, and it is a direct message to Pritzker that we have had enough of his dangerous policies. We want criminal illegals who have been convicted in Illinois to do their time here and then immediately be deported to their home country."

Katie Abraham of Glenview was killed earlier this year in a hit-and-run crash while visiting the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. According to Urbana police, the U.S. Marshal's Service captured the driver in Milford, Texas, as he rode a bus heading to Mexico. 29-year-old Julio Cucul Bol of Guatemala was arrested and charged with four felonies: aggravated DUI involving death, leaving the scene of a fatal crash, aggravated DUI causing bodily harm, and leaving the scene of a personal injury crash.

HB4237 gives power to the Illinois State Police (ISP) to deport illegal immigrants who are convicted of crimes that result in death or great bodily harm. After a prison sentence has been served in full, the Illinoi State Police have full authority to immediately deport individuals to their country of origin.

Joe Abraham made the following statement, "Katie's death was preventable. She was killed by a man, Julio Cucul Bol, who entered and remained in our country illegally. He was using multiple aliases, exploiting gaps in an overwhelmed and disorganized immigration system. Illinois' sanctuary law allowed this monster to roam free. He should have been removed long before he could take my daughter's life."

Julio Cucul Bol is currently serving 30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
