On March 3, 2026, Mr. Pan Qingjiang, Chinese Consul General in Johannesburg, met with Mr. Alderman Nkosindiphile Xhakaza,the Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni. Mr. Pan briefed the Executive Mayor on China's "15th Five-Year Plan", the development of China-South Africa relations and sub-national exchanges and cooperation. The Consul General reaffirmed China's resolution to pursue high-level opening-up, providing the world including South Africa with more developmental opportunities. Mr. Pan further expressed his willingness to promote the exchange between Ekurhuleni and its Chinese counterparts, and jointly implement the arrangement of China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges. Speaking highly of the efforts by the Ekurhuleni municipal government to ensure the safety of Chinese nationals and institutions, Mr. Pan hoped that both sides would continue to work together to create a safe and favorable environment for development.
Mr. Xhakaza commended the bilateral relations and expressed willingness to further develop friendly sub-national relations with China. The Executive Mayor pledged that the municipal government would continue to take practical measures to safeguard the safety and legitimate rights and interests of Chinese nationals and institutions.
