Highland Acres Historic District Tour Maps Available

The Bismarck Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) has created free walking tour brochures of the Highland Acres Historic District.

The brochures include information related to the neighborhood's development and a map which highlights notable buildings within the district. These brochures not only promote the significance of this neighborhood's history but provide a fun experience for individuals looking to get active and explore Bismarck.

Established in the aftermath of WWII, Highland Acres provided a haven for veterans seeking to build a better future for themselves and their families. The district's significance was duly recognized when it was added to the National Register of Historic Places, a testament to its enduring legacy and architectural significance. "It's been a dream come true to see it listed on the National Register as Bismarck's first mid-century neighborhood and have its story told," Bismarck Historic Preservation Commissioner Amy Sakariassen said.

The Highland Acres Historic District brochures are the most recent addition to the walking tour brochures developed by the HPC. They join the previous brochures for the Downtown Historic District and the Cathedral Area Historic District as an important educational resource for understanding and celebrating Bismarck's history. "This brochure has been produced to make Highland Acre's history available to both residents and visitors and we encourage the community to celebrate and explore it," Sakariassen said.

Members of the public can obtain copies of these free brochures at the City of Bismarck Community Development Department office during regular business hours.
