Reporters Without Borders (RSF) had the honour of receiving the 2026 Jean-Marie Drot Prize from France's Civil Society of Multimedia Authors (SCAM) on 17 June. Each year, this organisation's lifetime achievement awards recognise those in France who have made a significant impact in the fields of audiovisual, radio, written and journalistic creation.
"The SCAM applauds RSF's editorial team for their commitment to press freedom. Throughout the world, the growing number of threats against journalists and press freedom makes their work more essential than ever. Through this award, the SCAM affirms its solidarity with those who, everywhere in the world, defend creativity, press freedom and the fundamental right to inform and be informed.
"In its 40 years of existence, RSF has learned a lot. In particular, that journalists no longer simply 'die' but are now 'killed.' That from collateral victims of conflicts, they have become targets. That press freedom goes beyond the mere safety of journalists and depends on the social, political, legal and economic context in which the media operate. And that sometimes it is journalists who are killed, but at other times it is journalism itself that is dying. RSF is an organisation that defends press freedom, understood both as journalists' ability to act and the public's right to information. And today, to wage these battles, it is essential to have allies such as the SCAM, with whom we share the same ethical approach to observation, writing and reporting.
The prize awarded to RSF, the Jean-Marie Drot Prize, is named after the SCAM founding member and president from 1995 to 1999, a tireless defender of the arts, cultural diversity and copyright. It honours those who work with commitment to support authors, culture and creative expression.
RSF joins a prestigious list of previous recipients: Charlie Hebdo, François Hurard, Mariya Gabriel, Jean-Marie Barbe, Guy Seligmann, Claude Guisard, Virginie Rozière, Marc Joulaud, Pervenche Bérès, Jean-Marie Cavada, Jean-Noël Jeanneney, Pierre Wiehn, Thierry Garrel, Bernard Pingaud, Danièle Ohayon, Catherine Tasca and Yves Jaigu.
RSF congratulates the other recipients of the 2026 SCAM Lifetime Achievement Awards: the film director Elisabeth Kapnist (Charles Brabant Prize), the historian Michelle Perrot (Marguerite Yourcenar Prize), the documentary-maker, journalist and radio producer Marion Thiba (Sound Work Prize) and Mediapart journalist Fabrice Arfi (Christophe de Ponfilly Prize).
