Mayor Bowser to Celebrate $67 Million Modernization of Malcolm X Elementary School in Ward 8

(Washington, DC) - On Monday, September 21 at 11 am, Mayor Muriel Bowser, Ambassador Attallah Shabazz, the eldest daughter of Malcolm X, the DC Department of General Services (DGS), and DC Public Schools (DCPS) leaders will celebrate the completion of the $67 million modernization of Malcolm X Elementary School in Ward 8.

During the visit, Mayor Bowser will cut the ribbon on the newly modernized school, which is double the size of the former facility. The new 85,000-square-foot school features expanded early childhood education classrooms, modern general elementary classrooms, STEAM spaces, a new gymnasium and library, outdoor learning spaces, playgrounds, and a synthetic turf athletic field. The modernized school also features public art honoring Malcolm X, including a life-size statue.

Malcolm X Elementary School is one of eight schools that received either a modernization or addition for School Year 2026-2027, reflecting the Bowser Administration's continued investment in public education. Since 2015, the District has invested $468 million in school projects in Ward 8.
