"Each November, we recognize the extraordinary love and lifelong commitment of those who open their hearts and homes to a child, providing them with a family, a sense of belonging and a place to call home.
"Adoption Awareness Month is a time to celebrate Alberta's families who have grown through adoption and private guardianship, recognizing that each of these families carry a unique story of courage and belonging. We celebrate the courage of adoptive parents who take on a lifelong commitment, not knowing what adventures lie ahead. And we honour the child who brings their history, hopes and identity into the family that chose them.
"I'm deeply grateful to the adoptive parents and private guardians who do so much more than provide a home, but create a sense of belonging and a strong foundation for young people to build their lives upon. The bonds you create and the love, care and support you provide have an impact that lasts a lifetime.
"Alberta continues to support families who choose adoption and help make the journey more accessible and affordable. Supports include an increased tax credit and a $6,000 subsidy to reduce adoption costs through a licensed agency by as much as 50 per cent. We also support adoptive parents, and those building their families through private guardianship of children in care, with the Supports for Permanency program's financial benefits.
"I know the power of building those connections personally. As an adoptive parent, welcoming a child into our family has been one of the most meaningful and enriching experiences of our lives. Adoption doesn't simply change the life of a child or youth. It changes families, too - for the better.
"To every family considering adoption, I encourage you to learn more. You do not need to be perfect. You need only to be present, patient and willing to love a child through every season of their life. The bonds you create and the love, care and support you provide can have an impact that lasts a lifetime.
"Check out our adoption information sessions both in person and online, or information on our website alberta.ca/adoption where you can find profiles of children waiting for forever homes.
"This month, I hope all Albertans will celebrate the families grown and strengthened through adoption and consider the difference that opening your heart and home could make in a young person's life."
