Should You Buy Albemarle Stock For Its Cash

For questions about this article or underlying research, email [email protected].

Albemarle (ALB) stock offers a free cash flow yield of 12.4%, compared with 4.2% for the median S&P 500 company. That yield comes after the shares lost about half their value over the past six months, and a yield this high means either a business on sale or one that investors expect to make less cash. So how solid is the cash Albemarle makes?

Albemarle's Cash Is Strong Now, But Recent

Albemarle generates strong cash today, but it is recent. Free cash flow, the cash left after capital spending, reached $1.44 billion over the twelve months to September 2026, compared with $0.112 billion a year earlier. Shareholders own that cash whether Albemarle pays it out or keeps it, and the share price tends to follow cash that investors trust, more so when the cash is growing.

Energy Storage, the lithium business, generated $2.71 billion of Albemarle's $5.14 billion revenue in 2025. The Specialties segment sells products such as bromine. Third-quarter revenue rose 18.8% from a year earlier, an increase management attributed mainly to higher pricing in energy storage. Over the latest twelve months, capital spending took 21.9% of cash from operations, meaning most of that cash was left over.

That cash has not been steady. Free cash flow was above zero in only six of the thirteen twelve-month periods ending from September 2023 to September 2026. In the twelve months to September 2024, Albemarle burned $1.43 billion.

Swings like that are why balance beats a bet. Here's how to invest for a crash and a rally.

Albemarle carries lighter debt now. The company reduced its total debt to $1.88 billion at the end of September 2026, down from $3.74 billion a year earlier. Its $1.85 billion in cash and short-term investments nearly matches that debt, while operating income covered interest expense 6.7 times over the twelve months.

Albemarle Expects Weaker Fourth-Quarter Lithium Sales

For the fourth quarter of 2026, management expects Energy Storage net sales and adjusted EBITDA to fall from the third quarter, with volumes steady, assuming today's lower market pricing persists. Management also expects margins to fall as higher-priced raw material from its Talison joint venture runs through costs while pricing trends lower. That is a forecast, not a result, but Albemarle's third quarter was already thinner: the operating margin was 10.1%, compared with 26.4% in the second quarter.

The share price appears to assume that Albemarle's cash will shrink as lithium prices fall. Based on its reported twelve months, though, Albemarle still looks like a business on sale, with a 12.4% free cash flow yield.

Management is cutting costs and spending. Its teams have delivered more than $150 million in run-rate cost and productivity improvements so far in 2026, management said. Albemarle also lowered its 2026 capital spending guide to $300 million to $350 million, from about $500 million.

What To Watch In Albemarle's Next Report

Albemarle has not yet shown that its cash is steady. Twelve-month free cash flow rose at each of the last two quarter ends, yet the third quarter alone produced $0.325 billion, compared with $0.638 billion in the second.

Albemarle carries its debt comfortably today, and management is pursuing growth at Greenbushes, Wodgina and the Salar de Atacama. Albemarle still has to show that its cash holds up as lithium prices fall.

Albemarle is expected to report next in February 2027, and its free cash flow for the quarter is the number to watch.
