UC student ties his own world record in competitive speedcubing

Computer science student defends his title by matching his best time

Speedcuber's Digest highlighted University of Cincinnati computer science student's two-time 2x2 speedcubing world record.

At a competition in Mississippi, Sujan Feist recorded a 0.86 second average, tying the previous world record that he set last year at a competition in Coshocton, Ohio.

The competitions consist of five solve attempts with the fastest and slowest times discarded. The remaining three are averaged for a final score.

His solves in Mississippi were: 0.85, (2.97), 0.81, 0.91, and (0.66).

This result not only tied the world record but is also his 17th official sub-one-second average. According to Speedcuber's Digest, Feist is one of only seven cubers in WCA history to have accomplished that feat. This level of speed and precision takes practice. Feist has been solving cubes for most of his life.

"I solved my first cube around the age of 9, then proceeded to get my time on the 3x3 cube down to 20 seconds," he said. "I quickly got the 2x2 cube down to five seconds."

Practice, practice and more practice is what brought that time down to the world record it is today. A 2x2 cube has 3 million possible combinations, entails between 13 and 15 turns of a cube, and Feist does it all in less than a second. Along with the two-time world record, Feist holds 62 gold medals in speecubing.

He is studying computer science in UC's College of Engineering and Applied Science.
