SCO Secretary-General Meets with Chairman of the Board of Directors of Habib Bank Limited
On June 30, 2026, at the Secretariat of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Beijing, SCO Secretary-General Nurlan Yermekbayev met with Sultan Ali Allana, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Pakistan's Habib Bank Limited (HBL).
The parties discussed priority areas of cooperation in the context of HBL's chairmanship of the SCO Interbank Consortium (IBC) starting from October 2026. It was noted that in 2026-2027, the chairmanship of the Organization passes to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. This will enable the Pakistan to contribute to strengthening banking and financial cooperation.

The parties exchanged views on the use of national currencies in mutual settlements among SCO member states. Sultan Ali Allana noted HBL's achievements in this area and emphasized the feasibility of gradually applying this experience across the entire banking community of the Organization.
They discussed issues of improving the efficiency of the IBC's activities, implementing the Agreement on Interbank Cooperation of October 26, 2005, as well as the need to update its provisions in light of current realities.
The parties spoke in favor of organizing specialized events and the expediency of implementing multilateral projects in various sectors of the economy under the auspices of the SCO.
The meeting was held in a friendly and constructive atmosphere. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to close interaction in order to advance banking and financial cooperation for the benefit of improving the well-being of the peoples of the SCO member states.
