Lancaster, CA. May 21, 2026 -- The City is actively addressing two maintenance issues at the Sgt. Owen Memorial Playground: the replacement of two damaged slides and repairs to the pour-in-place playground flooring.
During a routine playground inspection conducted at the end of January, staff identified that two slides required replacement. To ensure public safety, PARCS Maintenance staff immediately installed barriers to restrict access to the affected slides, and replacement parts were promptly ordered from the playground vendor.
Because the Owen Memorial Playground is a custom-designed playground, replacement components must be specially manufactured, resulting in extended lead times. When the vendor arrived to complete the installation, it was discovered that the vendor had ordered and manufactured incorrect replacement parts. The vendor has since reordered the correct components and will complete installation as soon as the replacement parts are received.
In addition, staff is expediting repairs to the pour-in-place playground flooring. Quotes have been requested from authorized vendors and will be processed through the City's purchasing procedures. Repair work will begin as quickly as possible once the procurement process is complete.
The City appreciates the community's patience and understanding as these improvements are completed.
