For January, the 2026 NATCA wall calendar features a photo of Baltimore ATCT (BWI) taken by local member Nathan Twerberg.
Baltimore ATCT is a level eight FAA tower with 26 NATCA members. The airport first opened in 1950. The airport has gone through several name changes! When it opened it was called Friendship International Airport, before being renamed Baltimore/Washington International Airport in 1973. In 2005, the airport's name was changed to Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, to honor former U.S. Supreme Court justice Thurgood Marshall, a native of Baltimore.
The current air traffic control tower at BWI was dedicated in 1983. On an average day, the controllers working there handle approximately 608 operations, more than 71,000 passengers, and 1.4 million pounds of cargo, making it the 22nd busiest passenger airport in the United States.
