The Sparks City Attorney's Office has announced that its prosecutor secured a conviction against Brayan Mendoza Ratzan, for Domestic Battery, first offense, stemming from an incident that occurred on March 14, 2026.
On March 14th, 2026, law enforcement responded to a Sparks apartment complex for a domestic disturbance. The reporting party advised dispatch that her husband had punched her in the arms and was attempting to kick her out of the residence.
The victim indicated she and her husband got into a verbal argument during which MENDOZA RATZAN became angry with her because she does not clean the house enough. The verbal argument escalated, and while she was seated on the couch in their living room, MENDOZA RATZAN sat next to her and began to put his shoulder and his head into her clavicle. The victim stated the pressure caused by MENDOZA RATZAN began to cause her pain. She asked him to stop, but he refused and put both of his arms around her. She attempted to get up and away from him, but she couldn't. He began to shake her and smacked her face. The victim attempted to push him away, but MENDOZA RATZAN told her that if she pushed him away again, he was going to punch her. She again attempted to distance herself a third time from MENDOZA RATZAN by using her hand, and he punched her on her left arm with his right hand. She attempted to distance herself a fourth time by going out onto the balcony to get some fresh air. While she was on the balcony, MENDOZA RATZAN locked the door on her. She was only able to get back into the apartment because their child was crying. The victim stated that both her children were in the room while the physical altercation occurred. She stated MENDOZA RATZAN punched her a second time on her right arm, but not as hard as the first time. She stated that after the second punch, she retreated to the bedroom to change their child's diaper and feed him. She said MENDOZA RATZAN followed her to the bedroom and cornered her again, not allowing her to leave the room. She eventually left the room to get water in the kitchen area, and he followed and cornered her there as well.
The officer observed a 3-4" long red abrasion on the victim's upper left arm by her tricep, and a 1-2" long red abrasion on her upper right arm by her tricep, consistent with being struck
The Officer spoke with MENDOZA RATZAN, and he stated the verbal argument began because he was upset with the victim for not cleaning the house and not making dinner. MENDOZA RATZAN said he had given her a bear hug on the couch and asked her if she wanted to talk. He said she began to punch him to get away. I did not observe any injuries on MENDOZA RATZAN. When the officer asked him if he had punched the victim, he motioned with his right hand in a punching motion and admitted to striking the victim on her arm. This was consistent with observed injuries.
Based on both the victim's and MENDOZA RATZAN's account of the physical altercation, his admission, and the visible injuries sustained by the victim, MENDOZA RATZAN was placed under arrest for NRS 200.485.1a Domestic Battery (1st).
As law enforcement was escorting MENDOZA RATZAN out of the residence, he requested both sets of the car keys to come with him to Washoe County Detention Center. MENDOZA RATZAN and the victim share a vehicle. He was adamant about taking both sets of keys, leaving the victim and their two kids without access to a vehicle in case of emergency. This further demonstrates MENDOZA RATZAN's power and control over the victim.
On June 11, 2026, a Senior Assistant City Attorney represented the City of Sparks and secured a conviction for Domestic Battery, first offense against the Defendant.
