Federal Government Could be Facing Partial Shutdown

The federal government could be facing a partial shutdown. Senate Democrats have indicated they will withhold the votes needed to advance a six-bill spending package over concerns for Department of Homeland Security funding. Democratic support is needed to reach the 60-vote threshold necessary to move the legislation forward. The House has already approved the bill and would need to pass any revamped version. Further complicating the process is that the House is out this week. If no agreement is reached by Friday's deadline, this would mark the second federal government shutdown in less than three months.

The key dates to watch this week:

  • Monday, January 26: The Senate is scheduled to be in session briefly.
  • Friday, January 30: The Continuing Resolution expires at the end of the day.
  • If funding is not approved, a shutdown begins January 31.

The Association will continue to monitor progress and provide updates.
