Health Professions Discovery Day Inspires Future Healthcare Leaders

On June 3, the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) welcomed approximately 90 high school students from 16 schools across South Texas for its annual Health Professions Discovery Day. Designed to introduce students to the wide range of careers available in healthcare, the event provided hands-on learning experiences, faculty interaction, and exposure to academic pathways within UIW's nationally recognized health professions programs.

The day began with a welcome from Dr. Eva Fernandez, drawing inspiration from Florence Nightingale's belief that healthcare is among the "finest of Fine Arts," Dr. Fernandez, encouraged students to explore their interests, ask questions, envision themselves as future healthcare professionals and most of all to remember to enjoy the journey. "You can't get good at something if you don't enjoy it," she shared, reminding students to always look for the playful side of learning. Opening remarks were also provided by Dr. Lisa McDougle, whose message highlighted the importance of service, compassion, and lifelong learning in the health professions.

Health Professions Discovery Day is a collaborative effort made possible through the dedication of faculty, staff, and student volunteers from across the University. The success of the event reflects the collective efforts of Academic Affairs, Enrollment Management, the five health professions schools, faculty, staff, and student volunteers who worked together to create a meaningful and inspiring experience for future Cardinals.

Special recognition goes to Dr. Lyndsay Karimisaleh for her leadership in coordinating the event, Dr. Roxanna Aguilar for assisting with planning and closing remarks, and the many faculty and staff members from the Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing and Health Professions, Feik School of Pharmacy, Rosenberg School of Optometry, School of Osteopathic Medicine, and School of Rehabilitation Sciences who shared their expertise and created engaging learning experiences for students. Nine student volunteers served as camp guides throughout the day, helping participants navigate campus, transition between activities, and experience the welcoming Cardinal community firsthand.

Students explored opportunities across UIW's five health professions schools through interactive demonstrations, program showcases, and conversations with faculty and current students. These experiences provided valuable insight into the educational pathways leading to careers dedicated to serving others and improving the health of communities.

For many attendees, particularly first-generation college students, Discovery Day offered an opportunity to envision themselves pursuing higher education and healthcare careers. By connecting students with mentors, faculty, and healthcare professionals, the event helps strengthen the pipeline of future healthcare leaders while supporting UIW's mission of service and educational access.

The event's impact was evident in the reflections shared by UIW student volunteers who served as camp guides throughout the day.

"I had such a fun time getting to know the students, and it was an honor helping them navigate throughout the day," said Alex A.

"It was such a privilege to welcome the new generation of healthcare students to our campus and help them discover what their future may look like," shared Khushi N.

Emily R. reflected on the experience, saying, "Volunteering at the HP Camp allowed me to experience the impact of educating and inspiring young students."

Austin M. added, "I really enjoyed meeting students interested in becoming future healthcare providers. I think it's great that they're exploring health profession schools now so they can discover what they're most passionate about."

Faculty and staff also recognized the significance of the event. Stephen Cheney, pre-pharmacy advisor in the Feik School of Pharmacy, noted, "It was great seeing such a variety of motivated and talented students from around San Antonio. I can see what kind of hub UIW has become in San Antonio's broader private education community. UIW's recruitment events are always a joy to facilitate."

The day concluded with encouragement from faculty and healthcare professionals, emphasizing the importance of curiosity, perseverance, and a strong foundation in science. As students left campus, many carried with them a clearer vision of their future and a deeper understanding of the many ways they can make a difference through careers in healthcare.

Health Professions Discovery Day continues to serve as an important bridge between secondary education and healthcare careers, helping students discover their passions while showcasing the transformative opportunities available through a UIW education. By introducing students to healthcare pathways early and connecting them with mentors and role models, UIW is investing in the next generation of compassionate healthcare professionals who will serve communities across Texas and beyond.
