Registration open for fall faculty development workshops

Advance at the University of New Mexico, in partnership with the Faculty Research Development Office, is offering a variety of workshops open to all faculty.

This semester's topics include exploring new funding sources and connecting with your audiences; how to turn your work into real-world solutions using NSF funding; and how to work with Category III centers at UNM. A few of these events are non-Advance events. but are of interest to faculty.

Fall Events

Sept. 10: Faculty Search Workshop - This faculty search workshop is required for all department chairs, faculty search committee chairs, faculty search committee members, and search coordinators participating in faculty searches during AY26. Choose from Sept. 5, 10, 11 or Oct. 3.

Sept. 11: Turning Your Scientific Discoveries into Real-World Solutions with NSF Funding - Learn about NSF's new funding opportunity-Translation to Practice (NSF 25-540)-that supports work to move basic science projects towards commercial applications. You can apply for funding to supplement an existing NSF award or submit a new application focused on use-driven innovation. This event takes place on Zoom. Register here.

Sept. 19: You're an Associate Professor: Celebration, Strategy, and a Little Commiseration - Join them for a discussion of this next phase in your career. The goal is to celebrate the work required to get here, discuss opportunities you may not be aware of, and offer some strategies for managing new expectations. Register here.

Sept. 26: Cultivating Connections: Outreach, Engagement, and Fundraising for Local Change - How can you build partnerships beyond the university, reach local audiences, and raise funds for this work? They will have suggestions and information about offices and organizations both within and outside UNM who can help. This event takes place on Zoom. Register here.

Sept. 29: Academic Pipelines for Lobos with Disabilities first meeting - Join the 2025-2027 CTL Presidential Teaching Fellow, Marissa Greenberg (Associate Professor, English), and colleagues for a series of virtual conversations about disability and academia. Part 1 of "Academic Pipelines for Lobos with Disabilities" (read Marissa's proposal), these conversations are for all UNM faculty who seek a community in which to talk, listen, and share experiences of, and aspirations for, the past, present, and future of disability and academia. Oct. 15: Join colleagues for 7-minute talks about their research and scholarship. Time will be available for questions during and after the event. No registration required. Join in to meet new people, network and learn. NOTE NEW LOCATION AND TIME: This semester's Lightning Lounges will take place in the Honors College forum, in building #76 on the main campus map. The event also starts at 3:30 p.m. instead of 4 p.m.

Oct. 17: Category III Research Centers at UNM: Infrastructure for Impactful Research - Category III research centers and institutes exist alongside colleges or schools, with directors reporting to the Vice President for Research. Affiliated faculty and the centers' scope of activities span more than one college or school. This panel discussion with multiple Cat. III Center Directors will introduce you to their work, their resources, and how you can get involved. This event takes place on Zoom. Register here.

Oct. 24: Using Your Mid-Pro Evaluation to Develop a Roadmap to Tenure - Congratulations, you're over the halfway mark in applying for promotion & tenure. What steps should you be taking next? What resources are available to help you move forward in response to suggestions in your reappointment letter? Bring your questions and concerns. Register here.

Nov. 7: Annual Reviews and Milestone Evaluations - What's the difference between policy, process, expectations, and urban legends when it comes to key evaluations? AVP for Faculty Affairs Christopher Lyons and Advance Director Julia Fulghum will discuss annual reviews, mid-pro, and promotion & tenure. This session includes information for both tenure-track faculty and lecturers. Location TBD. Register here.
